Cardiology – Asia’s first percutaneous aortic valve replacement (an alternative for patients unable to undergo traditional surgery techniques) was performed in Singapore.
Gynaecology – In a world first, Singapore performed an operation for a rare ectopic pregnancy with a single incision through the belly button.
Oncology – In 2008, Singapore became the first in Asia to introduce total peritonectomy, a radical multidisciplinary surgical procedure to treat advanced cancers.
Ophthalmology – Singapore performed more DSAEK (transplant of the inner endothelial layer of the cornea) surgeries than any single institution in Europe or Asia in 2009.
Orthopaedics – Singapore pioneered the Triple Endobutton Technique, a radical technique to treat shoulder injuries.
Paediatrics – Southeast Asia’s first open-heart microsurgery was performed in Singapore on two neonatal babies whose hearts were just two centimetres across.
Transplants – The first ever combined heart and liver transplant surgery in Asia was successfully performed in Singapore.
