Cancer
What is cancer? chinese
Living things, including us, are made up cells. These cells are synthesized when the body needs them and die when the body no longer require them. However cancerous cells formed when the normal cells are mutated when exposed to carcinogen. These cancerous cells are no longer able to function properly, can disrupt the functioning of the normal cells and destroy the function of major organs. There are many different types of cancers, such as lung, colon, breast, bones and nerve cancer that develop in the respective places (U.S. National Library of Medicine, 2010).
Complications of cancers
For most cancer patients, they will experience significant reduction in body weight called cancer cachexia. It can be caused by the cancerous cells, loss of appetite due to medication and treatments and also mal-absorption of nutrients.
Metabolic changes in the cancer patients made them lose lean mass and having difficulty in maintaining body weight even if they consume well balanced and adequate diet. Cancer patients have higher rates for protein and fat breakdown, and also develop insulin resistance.
They might develop anorexia and reduced in food intake. These might be by several of reasons such as chronic nausea and early satiety, fatigue, pain, mental stress and effects of cancer therapies and gastrointestinal obstructions (Rofles, S.R., et al, 2006).
