Health screenings are tests done to detect diseases or risk factors to certain diseases. They allow us to have a better understanding of our own health, and take control of our own health. In early detection of diseases and risk factors, we can go to the doctor early get our disease cured at an early stage or prevent the disease from even occurring.
Why do we need health screening?
Due the fast pace of living around the world, we are at risk for getting chronic diseases that may lead to disability or even death. These diseases may not show their symptoms until the later stages of the diseases when they are difficult to treat and may lead to many complications. Hence, it is crucial to have health screening to detect the diseases and prevent the diseases or complications that the diseases might bring.
Health screening is a wide range and contains many different tests. There are many combinations of test to meet the different needs of people.
The different types of tests include:
1. Medical History
Complete interview by doctor to find out your past and present medical and family history.
2. Physical Examination
Complete physical check for eyes, ears and others
3. Chest X-Ray
Checking for possible pulmonary tuberculosis, pneumonia and other lung diseases.
4. Electrocardiogram (ECG)
Assessing for heart function and rhythm to detect any cardiac abnormalities.
5. Multiphasic Blood Tests
Detection of conditions such as gout, thyroid, anaemia, leukaemia, diabetes, hepatitis, sexually transmitted diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, liver and kidney disorders, and high cholesterol.
6.Urinalysis
Determining the state of kidney function as well as of the urinary tract.
7. Stool Analysis
Screening for gut disorders through the testing for stool occult blood, a recognised manifestation of gut cancer.
8. Pap Smear
Screening for cervical cancer in women.
9. Cancer Screening
Detection of tumour markers produced by some cancer cells through simple blood tests. Screening tests exist for liver, colon, intestines, prostate, ovarian and nose cancers.
10. Ultrasonic Examination
Detection of abnormalities in the liver, gall bladder, biliary system, pancreas, spleen and kidneys. It also helps to detect disorders of the pelvis, ovaries, uterus, bladder in women; and bladder and prostate disorders in men.
11. Lung Function Test
Determining the efficiency of the lungs and airways.
12. Audiometry
Assessing hearing ability.
13. Tonometry
Assessing the pressure of the eyeball.
